“The truth is that CAAD overcomes the dichotomy between technē (craftsmanship) and poiēsis (art). Although digitally driven, his work does not succumb to the pervasive allurement of ‘Parametric Digital Modernism’—the unspecified whitewash (actually grey) of 3D surfaces, the universal Sachlichkeit of algorithmic design techniques, and the mechanistic vision of input-output interactivity..”
- Dr. Marjan Colletti on the work “Synthetic Syncretism” of Tobias Klein 2006
Tobias Klein Dip.Arch (Dist.), M.Arch (UCL) studied Architecture at the RWTH Aachen, Germany, the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, Austria (master class of Wolf D. Prix) and finished his studies at the Bartlett School of Architecture. (Distinction in Design, Commendation RIBA Silver Medal 2006; Winner ARCH+ prize 2006)
He has worked as a design architect for Coop Himmelb(l)au in Vienna, as well as collaborated with Nigel Coates on various projects (Mixtacity, Venice Biennale 2008) and is a consultant for several smaller offices in London.
Klein taught architecture at several universities including London Southbank University, University of Greenwich and University of Nottingham. He is running the postgraduate Architectural Design Studio 1 at the Royal College of Art together with Roberto Bottazzi and is curating the International Open Architectural Lecture Series at the London Southbank University together with Kenny Tsui.
His current research focuses on the use of advanced medical diagnosis techniques (MRI and CT as well as Voxel systems) to asses the human body as a new ecology of spatial densities, able to counter-argue the axiomatic relation between architecture and parametric surface-driven spatial wrapping.
His work was published / exhibited including “Drawings” by Peter Cook, Arch+, BD, AR, AD (Protoarchitecture edited by Bob Sheil and Neoplasmatic Architecture edited by Marcos Cruz and Steve Pike) as well as the Royal Academy Summer show 2007 (winner of the student prize)
